Kayla has had a plantar's wart on the bottom of her foot since about November 2007. We, of course, started with over-the-counter medication--that didn't work. So in May of 2008 we took her to the pediatrician who tried freezing it off....six times! Which was every two weeks for a total of 12 weeks. He gave up--this was the most times he has ever frozen a plantar's wart. He then referred us to a foot doctor. Mind you, Kayla has been walking in pain, skating in pain, and playing basketball in pain since November 2007.
Off to the local foot doctor, by now it's the fall of 2008. We visit him three times every two weeks...nothing, absolutely no results! He tried scraping, putting some poison on it...nothing! He then refers us to a dermatologist to laser it off....this procedure is an hour away in another town. So we get the first appointment in January 2009...basically go there to hear 'yah, it's a wart' and make an appointment for the laser treatment. We decided to wait until basketball was over. The laser man comes from the Minneapolis the third Tuesday of the month...so March 17 it is.
Kayla continues to endure pain in her every day activity and patiently waits for March 17 to get rid of the painful wart on the bottom of her foot. So off to the bigger city on March 17 to have the laser done. She has it done.....she informs me that it felt like a knife going in her foot. She continues on with her life skating every day for two weeks getting ready for the ice show..foot still hurts...and it doesn't turn black like the dermatologist said it should. We had an appointment scheduled April 21 just in case she needed another treatment. The dermatologist is quite surprised and shocked to see that nothing happened....it didn't die and turn black!! She consults with a foot doctor. We tell her our frustration with this plantar's wart and she immediately gets in the swing of things and orders an x-ray to see if their is a bone spur in her foot....no, just a stubborn wart. After tag teaming with the foot doctor they decide surgery....thank you!!
So now we have to go downstairs again at the clinic and register to see the foot doctor (they just want to be sure this gets all billed right). So now we 'officially' see the foot doctor. He exams it--nearly gets kicked in the head by Kayla because it is so painful. He tells Kayla his surgery days are Tuesdays..."Yes, do it the next Tuesday"..she so wants it off her foot. He has only seen one other plantar's wart this bad and between the foot doctor and the dermatologist it took them a year to remove!! She will be out of school for one week and on crutches and wear a boot up to three weeks. She will have surgery Tuesday, April 28 under general anesthesia...which kind of freaks me out. So I will stay home from work a few days and help her out. She has NEVER missed more than one day of school..so this should be interesting. She also practiced with crutches....that will also be interesting. So watch for part 2 of this story...after surgery with Kayla. Wish us luck.

Well, good luck. That sounds so painful. I am glad they finally figured out what to do for her. I can't believe it took the "trained professionals" that long to figure it out. That stinks. Poor Kayla. We'll be praying for you.
